The Importance of a Business Strategy

Undoubtedly, an organization’s strategy is complex and comprises many components.  The major components that drive a business are its strategy, vision, values, and mission.  A business strategy provides a roadmap for the future outlook and development of an organization, while highlighting clear objectives.  Depending on the industry and purpose of the business, strategies are established and executed accordingly.  For example, an Airline’s strategy may be looking to establish an affordable and reliable regional airline that successfully addresses the needs of consumers while traveling.  Moreover, this strategy will provide the airline’s leaders guidance on how to make decisions that can help the airline accomplish this objective.  Moreover, everyone within the organization should be encouraged to make decisions based on a particular strategy to encourage the success of the organization.

Consequently, a business strategy helps organizations comprehend and achieve their objectives.  More specifically, when describing a firm’s strategy, one must analyze how the company is competing for the present and how the organization is preparing for the future.  In the above-mentioned example, the airline is competing for the present by emphasizing affordable prices and reliable services, which should enable the airline to survive long term and establish its brand within the industry in the future.  Additionally, a business strategy highlights how the firm competes within a particular industry or market.  In this example, the airline is not attempting to offer elevated prices but is instead looking to attract middle to upper-class customers who are more focused on the quality of the service than unnecessary luxurious accessories.  The airline has a defined target market, streamlining its advertising and marketing techniques.

Understandably, most organizations will struggle to succeed without clearly defined strategies and philosophies.  Overall, a business strategy provides direction and purpose while enabling leaders to make more educated decisions.  Ultimately, a business strategy keeps the organization moving forward, while justifying decisions being made in the present.  In conclusion, a strategic plan is a valuable document for all businesses and all organizations should establish and abide by a particular strategic plan.
